Therapeutic Hand Care
Friday, 9th July 2010
Haverhill Volunteer Centre, Meeting room
Participants take part in a one-day course on Therapeutic Hand Care, in which they learn the specialised techniques of hand massage.
The treatment is a way to communicate care through touch and the fact that the volunteer spends time with the person can often be the valuable aspects of the service. The techniques learned can be used in a variety of volunteering opportunities. Often people who have been ill for a long time can lose interest in their appearance and the hand care can give a great boost to morale.

PROJECTS

Anybody interested in taking part please contact the office.

Volunteer Centre Haverhill is involved in a variety of projects.
Projects are supported by grants from various funders and are for the benefit of the community, the volunteers and organisations. They provide additional resources to enable the centre to recruit, place, train and support volunteers and to publicise the work the volunteers and the organisations do.
We are currently running the following projects:
GOOD NEWS: Haverhill Volunteer Centre has received funding for three new projects.
Funding has been received from Activities Unlimited to support families with children with additional needs. This project aims to match up volunteers with families needing support, it might be a visit once a week or a helping hand when taking the children out on trips or attending local activities. Training and ongoing support will be offered to volunteers.
We also have received funding from the West Suffolk Local Strategic Partnership to offer a befriending service in Haverhill. As part of this we have arranged training for volunteers on the ’role of the befriender’. This training aims to provide volunteers with sufficient training and information to enable them to feel confident in carrying out the role as a befriender. As part of the project we will be setting up an International Women’s Group in Haverhill. (see article below) The aim is to bring women from minority groups living in Haverhill together and we hope to arrange a meeting once a month with speakers from a variety of organisations.
We haven’t forgotten the young people living in Haverhill either, We have received funding from Youth & Connexions to support young people (11+) with volunteering in their community. The young people will work on local projects, design publicity materials, produce a youth newsletter and make a short film about their work to promote the benefits of voluntary work for young people. Accredited training available.
Various other training sessions have been set up as part of our training project supported by The Suffolk Foundation. (see page 4 or insert)
Anybody interested in any of the projects or for more information, please contact the office.

The office is very busy with getting evidence together to renew the Volunteering England Accreditation and also the Young Suffolk Quality Standard. These accreditations prove that we are working to the high standard expected from the Centre.
Volunteers’ Week is nearly here once again. Volunteers’ Week is a national celebration of volunteering which takes place from 1st to 7th June. This dedicated week gives us the opportunity to raise additional awareness of volunteering, but most of all—it gives us the chance to thank all of our volunteers for their commitment to volunteering. Without YOU the volunteer many groups would not be able to exist.
Thank you once again, we hope you will be able to join us at the Coffee Morning.
Best wishes from Elaine & Gaby

West Suffolk Caring Cards
informing businesses
about what you do!
A handy pack of Caring Cards has been designed to help promote the Voluntary and Community Sector services to businesses throughout West Suffolk. Rather like a pack of large playing cards in its own case this directory classifies the sectors services into 29 different categories such as sport, caring or children. For each card you will find the category name with a picture on the front and on the reverse a list of all the VCS service providers within West Suffolk for that category along with their contact telephone number. There are also 6 cards explaining about items such as employee volunteering, corporate social responsibility and payroll giving with the view to increase business involvement within our community.
Not only are these cards easy to use, stylish and free but they also offer a great opportunity to widen your services and become recognised. When Suffolk CONNECT carried out recent corporate social responsibility research into Suffolk businesses they found that nearly half of those approached were unaware of many VCS organisations in their local area. 89% however would like to be known for working with the community so hopefully these cards can help trigger the movement.
Through the West Suffolk Consortium and Suffolk CONNECT we will be distributing these Caring Cards across West Suffolk. It is hoped that companies will take these cards and use them as a signposting tool for queries that they cannot deal with alone. Employers will also be encouraged to use them for addressing employee issues and making sure that the cards are available for employees to access easily.
If you know of a particular business that would benefit from these cards or you would like to help distribute them yourself please contact the Volunteer Centre on 01440 708444 or get in touch with Anna Martin at Suffolk CONNECT on 01502 584061 or at anna@zwc.org.uk.
